Magical Special Needs Vacation Ideas
Recent changes to Disney's disability access pass have made visits to the Mouse at bit less magical for families of special needs children. Just because Disney World is off the table doesn't mean there aren't wonderful vacation alternatives in sunny Florida that cater to the unique needs of children with physical, cognitive and behavioral differences.
Sea World is an excellent choice because it still honors its guest assistance pass. Getting help requires just a two minute stop at Guest Services. Families are granted front of the line access at all attractions but one, special seating for shows and side door entry to crowded facilities. Another reason to love Sea World is the chance to sit. Instead of standing in line for 90% of the visit, visitors can relax and enjoy the many shows in air conditioned theaters or under shade. Don't think it's all slow going though. There are a number of thrill rides for those up to the challenge.
If coasters appeal, then Busch Gardens should top the list of places to visit. It has endless opportunities to flip, spin and dive in its top rated rides. The park also fully accommodates guests with special needs and honors fast pass access free of charge to these guests on all rides but Cheetah, its newest coaster. Like Sea World, Busch Gardens also has many quieter forms of entertainment that get kids off their feet and out of the heat.
Another advantage of these parks is they usually cost significantly less than Disney. They offer many specials and don't require families to stay on-site to get the best deals. If getting to do everything is a priority and traffic and lines aren't what you save vacation days for, then consider taking a non-Disney vacation to Florida. Seeing the fish and animals that these parks house and even interacting with them are often highlights.
