Special Needs Travel Airline Tips
Toss perfection out the window, many families make the mistake of starting out with the vision of the perfect family vacation. Stay relaxed this is the most important thing you can do, as you are relaxed your child will be relaxed. Rarely if ever do travel plans go accordingly anyways. Most great memories come from the surprises during travel anyways.
Check to see if the Airline offers expedited screening, this can simply be accomplished by calling the airline you will be flying with. Explain to them your needs and while you will still have to go through a lot of the same checks you will not have to be subjected to physical pat downs and long lines. This can greatly reduce any stress when it comes to strangers being very close to children who may not understand the process.
If using a travel agent, make sure you explain to them you will be traveling with a special needs child and have them book you on airlines that will accommodate your needs such as seating you near a bathroom, up front, in an aisle seat or whatever works best for you.
Once you have been seated give the flight attendants details of your child, the more information you share the more they will be able to help you if you may need assistance.
It’s important to keep your child comfortable and entertained with things they are most comfortable with. It is helpful to pack a carry on with items such as a portable DVD player with headphones packed along with favorite movies or music. These pack a head travel entertainment bags can be very helpful during longer flights.
