Overcoming Anxiety About Family Travel Anyone planning a family vacation wants it to be a fun and memorable experience for all family members. Family travel planning can cause anxiety but keeping in mind the following tips will help. Plan a Vacation You will Enjoy
When selecting a vacation choose one you know you will enjoy. Whether it be a cruise or a camping trip, the rest of the family is more likely to enjoy themselves if the person who plans the trip is having fun. If you aren't comfortable camping then don't plan a camping trip for your family even if you think they will love it. They will sense you are not excited about the trip and will respond to your emotions. Trial Run as Much as Possible If you have a special needs child that will be facing new experiences during the vacation attempt to provide exposure prior to departing. For example, if the vacation involves the first time on an airplane see if you can take a tour of the airport prior to the trip. If a tour is not available it is still possible to drive to the airport and watch planes take off and land. Talk through the process of boarding a plane while there. Consider bringing along a book that shows photos of the process to point out as you discuss. If the trip involves the first hotel stay visit a local hotel and ask to see a room. Giving your child the opportunity to visualize the experience as much as possible in advance will ease anxiety. Focus on Positive Stories When friends, relatives and acquaintances hear about your upcoming trip they will likely to have stories to share. They will share these stories as a way of provide you tips of what to do and what not to do. However, sometimes these stories become overwhelming especially if they focus on problems the traveler encountered. Keep in mind that millions of people travel every day successfully. Problems others have encountered will not necessarily be encountered by your family. Focus on the positive stories. Don't let the negatives ones intimidate you and your family.
