Vacation Time? Why Family Travel With Your Special Needs Child is More Important Than You Think1/21/2015 From a SpecialGlobe Family Member and Special Needs SiblingWhen I was a kid, my parents took us to a large amusement park. Me, my brother, and my little sister, Amy who has a cognitive special need. We waited in line for hours to go on what was, at the time, the most popular theme park ride in the country. As we approached the entry a teenager moved to block our way, chewing on his lips as his eyes fixed on my younger sister. "I don't know if she'll be able to handle this," he said to my mom. Taking a plane trip with a child with autism spectrum disorder can be stressful. The experience will likely cause anxiety for your child. No journey is ever going to be perfect but if you follow some simple tips, you might end up with many inspirational stories from travel.
It's such a sensitive subject and often embarrassing for parents to even ask but sometimes so necessary.
In a time where so many people are traveling and experiencing all that life has to offer it is hard for families with special needs child to participate. The lines are so long, the noise level can be through the roof and navigating through the millions of people can be overwhelming. On a recent trip to NYC with my children I was surprisingly delighted by the response I received to “the question” . We traveled over Memorial Day weekend and the first place that we went to visit was The Empire State Building. |
